Small Animal Services

Because of the shorter lifespan of our pets, we stress the importance of regular physical examinations.  Thorough check-ups and preventive care can help prevent serious health problems.  We offer a wide range of veterinary services to help your pets feeling their best.

Wellness Care: Regular examinations, vaccinations, health screening tests, parasite prevention, and dental care are tailored to meet your pet's unique needs.  We are proud to offer the safest, most efficacious vaccines available, including 3-year rabies vaccinations.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services: Our hospital is equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to care for your pets' complete health care needs.  We use gold-standard testing protocols for the most accurate results.

Surgical Services:  Our state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a wide variety of surgical procedures.  In addition to routine surgery such as neuters and spays, we also perform surgery on ferrets and rabbits, most soft tissue surgeries (e.g., foreign body removal, bloat, c-sections) and many orthopedic surgeries including TPLO, FHO and fracture repair.

Anesthesia:  We utilize the safest available anesthetics to provide an extra margin of safety, especially for our older or high-risk patients.  A Cardell veterinary monitor and Certified Veterinary Technician monitor patients' vital signs during all anesthetic procedures.  Parameters are recorded every 5 minutes during anesthesia and become part of your pet's medical record.  Our heated surgery table ensures the patient's body temperature is maintained, which allows for rapid recovery after surgery.  Patients are directly monitored after anesthesia during recovery.

Reproductive Services: We offer many services for the breeder, including: genetic testing (e.g., EIC, CNM, PRA); non-sedated OFA x-rays; breeding soundness examinations; vaginal cytology; in-house Brucellosis, progesterone and pregnancy testing; artificial insemination and semen analysis; pregnancy ultrasound and x-ray; whelping support and c-sections.

Imaging Services:  Our digital X-ray and ultrasonography equipment provide high quality images to aid in efficient diagnosis of many disorders.

Dentistry: Our dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, extractions and minor oral surgery using the state-of-the-art Ultimate Dental Station by Dentalaire.

Laboratory: We have an in-house laboratory for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing.  We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories such as Marshfield Laboratories, Michigan State University, TAMU GI-Lab and the University of Minnesota Diagnostic Laboratory for specialized diagnostics and consultations.

Permanent identification: We offer microchip identification using the Bayer resQ Pet Tracking System.  An advantage to this microchip is that we register your pet for you.

Pharmacy: We maintain a complete inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, flea and tick control products and heartworm preventatives to meet the needs of your pet.  We also work with compounding pharmacies to meet special needs and dosage requirements.

Individualized Flea Control Programs: We develop programs for the specific needs of your pet and your own particular environmental situation. We will review with you the best ways to control fleas in your house, in your yard and on your pet.  For dogs, we carry Frontline Plus and Comfortis.  For cats, we carry Frontline Plus and Revolution.

Dietary Counseling: We will provide guidance regarding your pet's nutritional needs for each life stage, including dietary requirements for growth, weight maintenance and performance.  We recommend and sell diets by Royal Canin Veterinary Diets.

Behavioral Counseling: We can provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling and aggression.
Many of us at APVH have trained, taught & shown dogs in various disciplines including obedience, agility and retrieving.
